Personality: Perhaps Hinata's most defining trait is her shyness. She stutters and winces and hides from problems in her early appearances, afraid seemingly of everything, casting her ability to become a ninja into doubt, so much so that she is denied her right as first born to become the heir to the Hyuuga clan. Her social skills are lacking, and she has little in the way of friends, and the boy she has fallen for, Naruto, barely knows she exists. Her humble and often defeatist attitude has made her a bit of a black sheep in her own family as well.

Her second most defining trait, however, is her willingness and determination to change. Hinata knows she has been weak and that her skills at this rate could likely never get her past Chuunin level, but she becomes determined, through the encouragement of her friends--Naruto, her longtime crush--in particular. She admires people with bravery and strength and wants to show them that she is worthy of the attention they give her and that she can be a useful ally in hard times.

Little has been shown of her development in the two years Naruto is absent, but she has been promoted to Chuunin level, showing that she has kept her own resolution to become stronger, even though her first reaction upon seeing Naruto again is to faint. She has made close friends, however, with her teammates Kiba and Shino being the closest, along with her sensei, Kurenai. She has accepted that she cannot be the heir to her clan and has made peace with her sister, father, and cousin, reuniting their torn family.

History: Hinata was born the eldest daughter of Hiashi Hyuuga, leader of the prominent Hyuga clan, and therefore destined to be its heir. However, due partly to her shy and timid nature, she had long been unable to perform very well as a ninja, no better than her younger sister Hanabi and nowhere near her older cousin Neji. As a result, her father deemed her a lost cause and left her to the care of Kurenai Yuhi, her sensei once she became a genin.

As she endured this, though, she looked to the boy she had long pined for, Naruto, as a source of inspiration. They had both been pegged as failures, but Naruto persevered. Hinata believed in his attitude and took it upon herself to quest for her own betterment as well.

Though she had not done well on her missions with her team (team 8, with Kiba and Shino), she chose to enter the Chuunin exams with them in an attempt to strengthen and prove herself. With the aid of her team, she made it through the first trial in the Forest of Death, only to find the second trial to be one-on-one fights with partners picked at random. She was given perhaps the worst choice for her, pitted against her strong, fierce, bitter cousin.

She was barely a match for him, as they fought with the same technique; the Juuken--Gentle Fist--style, utilizing the clan's unique Byakugan trait: eyes that can see nearly 360 degrees and can pinpoint chakra openings that they can then damage, injuring their opponents' internal organs with mere taps. Neji had greater mastery of it and fought her mercilessly, taunting her all the while about how people are unable to change an they were both destined for their fates. Hinata thought all was lost, when suddenly Naruto called out encouragement to her and told her to stand up for herself. She did, continuing to get up despite having no chance of winning. The fight was eventually stopped by the jounin overseeing it when Hinata told Neji he did not have to be confined to his fate and he came at her with intent to kill. Even as it ended, though, she was severely injured and had to be rushed to intensive care.

After all this, her cousin and father spoke and some troubles which had long plagued the clan were resolved, and both developed a gentler attitude toward their relative. Though still unable to become heir to the clan, Hinata had proven herself not to be worthless and was welcomed to the family again.

Not long after, she found out Naruto had to leave the village to train with the legendary Jiraiya. She went to see him off, but was unable to bring herself to get close to him, despite telling him in the hospital that he had been a great source of inspiration for her. Instead, she watched from afar as she had done even when they were children, pining for him even as all others despised him.

She is now 16 years old, and despite vowing to better herself for Naruto during his absence, the manga has not shown much of her. All that has been seen so far is the fact that Naruto's absence has only intensified her feelings for him, to the point that she hid from him when he finally returned, and fainted when he attempted to greet her.

Strengths: Her Byakugan, which she has developed greatly since her childhood; her understanding of the Juuken style; her determination; her concern and care for others.

Weaknesses: Her sometimes crippling shyness; her determination which can sometimes turn into foolhardiness, as she may pursue fights that could get her killed simply to prove herself; her physical fragility and weakness, without powers she likely wouldn't fare well in a straight-up fist fight.
